Poker Strategy for Winning

A player cannot control what kind of hand they will be dealt. This is why despite all of the tactics and strategies that can go into poker game-play, all poker variants are still essentially games of chance. Even with a bad hand though, it is still possible for a player to win a game of poker; often, it is a matter of playing the players rather than the cards. In poker strategy, it is often said that the important thing to remember is that while you do not know what cards your opponents are holding, neither do they know what your own cards are.

The fundamental theorem of poker basically states that winning a poker game is a matter of making the right kinds of decisions, even in the face of incomplete information. However, the more a player knows, the easier it is for a player to know which decisions are the right ones, so it is important to know more about opponents, as well as more about the game itself.

In a game of poker, all of the betting actions are completely voluntary, except for the initial forced bet that is usually used to "open the pot" for a particular hand. During a regular betting round though, after the round has been opened, when a player's turn comes, they have the option of calling or raising a bet, or folding on it. In order to remain in a hand and in contention for the pot, a player must at least call during their turn. This means that a player has to put in at least the same amount of money as the player before them. In raising, a player is essentially changing the bet amount to one that is higher than the previous one, and all of the other players are required to place this amount in as well. When a player folds, they choose to drop themselves out of that hand of poker, and no longer have to bet. Often, a player folds because they feel that their hand cannot stand up against other players' hands, or because they have calculated that making any further bets will hurt their chances for a positive expected value from the game, rather than helping.

While nothing short of cheating or a powerful microprocessor can tell a person for sure what kind of cards other players can have, it is still possible to discern what kinds of actions these other players might take or how they feel about their own hands. This can be done by observing the players; reading their reactions to certain actions and observing if they have any "tells" that might indicate whether or not they feel they should fold and forfeit that hand, or keep on playing.
